Program Overview:
We conduct a holistic application review process.
The pipeline program focuses on three main areas: academic preparedness, professional development, and personal well-being. It features a semi-structured curriculum developed in collaboration with medical students and faculty, integrating weekly modules on medical ethics, cultural competency, and health disparities.
The PHEP begins with a TWO-week in-person intensive summer program. The program will run from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday during the first two weeks of July 2025. You must be able to attend the entire two-week summer program in-person for your application to qualify for review. Please let us know if housing during this two-week period is an insurmountable financial barrier directly preventing your ability to apply.
The program will then meet bi-weekly for the duration of the academic year August 2025 - June 2026 to assist graduate school applications and professional development.
During the July program, in the mornings you will be fully integrated with New York Medical College’s incoming first-year medical students. participating You will participate in medical school-level lectures such as anatomy, radiology, biochemistry and/or acids and bases. Additional lectures may involve study skills, study resources, wellness activities, and the clinical application of the basic sciences.
During most afternoons you will have PHEP-specific lectures. Topics covered include:
Academic Support:
To support academic success, the program includes workshops on study skills, time management, and academic success strategies. Additionally, peer support networks are established to foster collaboration among participants, with each student receiving personalized guidance and support from a medical student mentor.
Mentorship and Hands-On Experience
Each participant is assigned a faculty mentor, facilitating opportunities for shadowing, hands-on clinical experiences, research involvement, and ongoing mentorship. Students interested in research can engage in projects mentored by faculty or researchers from NYMC affiliates or local pharmaceutical companies like Regeneron. Those inclined towards basic science or translational research will be paired with MD/PhD or PhD students who have expressed interest in mentoring prospective students.
Medical School Application Preparation
The program offers workshops designed to assist students in crafting strong medical school applications. These sessions cover writing compelling personal statements, acquiring effective letters of recommendation, and navigating application forms. Additionally, mock interview sessions are provided to help students prepare for medical school interviews, offering invaluable feedback on communication skills, and professionalism, and answering common interview questions effectively.
Volunteering and Community Service
Participants have the opportunity to volunteer at student-run clinics on campus, such as the New York Medical College Center for Human Rights. This clinic provides forensic medical evaluations to asylum seekers and victims of human trafficking. Through partnerships with volunteer physicians and organizations like My Sister’s Place, Neighbor’s Link, and Physicians for Human Rights, students gain hands-on experience in healthcare while serving vulnerable members of the community.
Collaboration and Stipend
Participants will also have and opportunity to work with the Pre-Matriculation Program (PMP) students and their sessions during the evenings. At the end of the program, a stipend will be awarded for participation during the summer.
